Austin Board of Realtors -
Director of Internet Technology - October 1999 - April 2000
I was responsible for the development and promotion of the association's two web sites. During my tenure, I oversaw the redesign of Austinhomesearch.com from a technology and user interface perspective. I led the team through the RFP process, database specification development, vendor selection/contract negotiation, budgeting, focus groups, user testing and debugging. I also managed a $125,000 advertising campaign targeting Central Texas homebuyers through billboard, print and radio ads.

Director of Marketing and Communications - June 1999 - October 1999
I created strategic marketing and communications plans for a 4,000-member trade association.  In this role, I developed and evaluated effective promotions, products, services, brand strategies and ensure positive media relations.  I oversaw a staff of two and was also responsible for all Internet development and strategies for the organization.

Web Site Developer - April 1998 - June 1999
Promoted to this newly created position after producing outstanding upgrades to the association's web site. In this position, I managed and maintained two sites, abor.org and austinhomesearch.com. I provided ongoing strategic direction for the organization on Internet topics and remained current on web trends to facilitate new opportunities for site development and strategic partnerships. 

  • New Program Development - Performed third-phase upgrade to the look, feel and functionality of abor.org. Learned to edit Perl scripts to facilitate rapid site development schedule. Developed Austinhomesearch.com to reach local home buying and selling audience. Created appropriate testing methodology and conduct user testing prior to launch of all new features. Worked with other departments to deliver their services online. Additions to the sites included a custom bulletin board program, major user interface and design improvements and development of password-protected extranets.
  • Management of External Vendors and Partners - Managed relationships with content vendors as well as our ISP and programmers. Reviewed contracts and maintained communications with these vendors. Developed detailed job specifications documents and negotiated pricing for programming functions.
  • Site Promotion to Organization Publics - Developed and implemented promotional plans timed to coincide with new feature roll-outs. Designed marketing collateral for all promotions and oversaw print production. Implemented mass e-mail programs and usage guidelines for multiple audiences. Represented the association at various functions to promote sites and plans to both members and external publics.
Communications Specialist (September 1994 - April 1998) 
Responsible for multiple marketing and public relations activities including the following: 
  • Media Relations - Ghost writing and editing of weekly and monthly association President's columns in the Austin American-Statesman, Austin Monthly and RealtyLine. Developed news releases to promote real estate market statistics, association events and courses. Prepared association leadership for media contact.
  • Web Site Development and Strategy - Solicited web site development bids, developed and organized association web site content, planned and executed second phase of revisions to site structure and graphic appearance, promoted site online and updated site content and graphics. Self-taught html programmer. Trained other staff to perform edits and basic html coding.
  • Marketing and Advertising - Wrote copy, edited, designed and solicited printing bids for major promotional materials, served as assistant editor of monthly newsletter (4,000 circulation). Worked with volunteers and staff to develop concept, secure production firm and place four television ads over a two-year period. Surveyed association membership via mail and focus groups.
  • Special Events - Responsible for successfully planning, promoting and executing every aspect of several events, including annual association awards banquet (600+ attendance), community awards program (250+ attendance) and Homebuyers' Fair (300+ attendance). Activities for these events included coordination with staff, media, volunteers, hotels, caterers and other vendors; speech writing; event budgeting; sponsorship solicitation and ticket sales. Attendance at these events increased 25% to 200% during my tenure.
  • Volunteer Coordination - Managed association volunteers in planning events and programs including a mentorship program, television advertising campaign and member community service activities. Reported to the board of directors as needed. 
Stellar Communications - Owner (1993 - present) 
I have operated a freelance graphic design business since 1993. Client services now include creative marketing solutions for the following areas: web site development and design, strategic communications, copy writing and media relations. 

Sulzer Orthopedics, Inc. - Communications Intern (May 1994 - September 1994) 
I assisted communications staff with the implementation of programs such as: 

  • writing, designing and producing company newsletter (circulation 700)
  • writing and editing news releases and fact sheets
  • providing graphic, writing and editing assistance for collateral and workshop/seminar materials
  • gathering bids from printers, service bureaus, computer retailers and paper companies
